This image of the eagle with flags and banner became enormously popular at the end of the Civil War. Our country was struggling to heal and rebuild, and this was an uplifting image of patriotism. E. Pluribus Unum. (One Out of Many) became our new country's official motto in 1782, and was particularly meaningful in the aftermath of war. These eagle pictures continued to be made well into the early 20th century.18 by 22 inches.

Primitive painting of a gypsy girl at a stream c1865

Primitive English oil on canvas of a gypsy girl at a stream. This lovely antique painting also depicts a man caring sticks for a fire walking back to another man sitting in a tent next to a covered wagon. The frame measures 19 by 21 inches and the painting measures 12 by 15 inches. This painting was part of the Tom Kaye collection. Tom Kaye was a very well know dealer in San Francisco on Union Street during the 1970's.

United Firemens Insurance Company Philadelphia plaque c1860. See Footprints of Assurance by Alwin E. Bulau page 89 number 315 to see and example of this Fire Plaque. 11 and one half inches by 9 inches with raised U F and a old model steam fire engine in high relief, beveled edge. The wheels have eight spokes and the policy number 7401 was issued on July 8 1875. Three nail holes. Some traces of the old paint are still on the surface.
